I have posted a lot on Digg and have always got a nice response in vistor numbers, diggs and comments. Comments on my blog tend to be nice, friendly and helpful, comments on Digg are a mix, most of the time people agree with me or give some advice, but then there are people who comment and say why have you posted this c***, my reply is always why do you read and comment on this c***, but there is definately a sense of a community on Digg which I like.
So why am I talking about the community, well a couple of days ago some users, I say some more like a lot of users posted the decryption key for HDDVD, this could well land Digg into a lot of trouble, and I hope to God that this hasn’t killed Digg, I am also hoping that if they get sued then the community steps in and stops it. I have mixed feelings on this subject, I am glad that Digg stopped banning people for posting and commenting on the posts, it shows that there is freedom of speech on Digg, but I am also dismayed at why people would post something like this on probably their favourite site, the site where they get all their daily news and laughs.
What would things be like without Digg, well I suppose Reddit would be happy with the nice amount of users it suddenly gets, but I certainly wouldn’t get anywhere near the amount of visitors and comments and I wouldn’t have easy access to the most informative blogs around, not to mention the team behind Digg who have gone from nothing to over 1 million users in about 2 years or so, would be out of work and their fantastic creation down the drain, what will the community feel like then.
